Valentín Vidaurreta

Valentín Vidaurreta was a crucial bridge between Mexican fine art and the emerging Taxco silver movement. Already active as a painter, muralist, stage designer, architect, and horticulturist, he brought an unusually expansive artistic vocabulary to silver after establishing a Mexico City workshop in 1936 and moving permanently to Taxco in 1941. His monumental, naturalistic repoussé flowers introduced a baroque vitality that complemented Taxco's better-known Pre-Columbian geometry. Vidaurreta designed extensively for Héctor Aguilar's Taller Borda and directly influenced Antonio Pineda, whose brief apprenticeship with him helped shape Pineda's interest in large-scale, sculptural jewelry. Because much of Vidaurreta's work was sold under other workshop marks, his signed pieces are especially important records of his independent authorship.
