A silver bird, wings drawn close, holds a compact profile that Matilde Poulat filled with dense ornamental incident: scrolls, beaded settings, and small stones clustered against the body rather than scattered across it. The pin belongs to a design vocabulary that Poulat built around Mexican folk and colonial devotional imagery, translated into jewelry that reads as a small, self-contained icon. Poulat worked in silver as a painter would, and the surface here carries that habit. She stands somewhat apart from the Taxco lineage that ran through Spratling's Taller de Las Delicias. Her postrevolutionary sensibility drew on Mexican popular and colonial religious art rather than on modernist abstraction, and she developed a style so distinct that it became a continuous workshop tradition. Her nephew Ricardo Salas worked alongside her throughout her career and, after her death in 1960, continued producing MATL designs while supervising a workshop of several silversmiths who fabricated and assembled the pieces. Dating a given MATL object therefore requires care. The script MATL marks with 0.925 and Hecho en Mexico DF belong to the 1934 to 1948 period, the M. Regis 142093 marks to roughly 1950 to 1960, and the MS-12 marks to the Salas continuation after 1980. A later fabrication of a long-established MATL design is consistent with the workshop's structure and is not a contradiction.
