Curatorial note

Wide loops with trailing tails give these earrings their motion, a design Spratling himself called "hanging ribbons" and one he shared with his salt spoons, so the same fluid form serves both the table and the ear. The ribbon idea reads as a piece of metal caught mid-fold, a soft curve held in rigid silver.

That a single design moved between flatware and jewelry is characteristic of the workshop's method, where a successful form was carried across object types rather than confined to one. The "hanging ribbons" motif is one of the recurring shapes in Spratling's vocabulary.

Earrings in this design are a recognizable example of the workshop's lighter, curvilinear jewelry and remain collectible.
