Curatorial note

A scalloped rim and a rounded, compact body give this small silver bowl a softer profile than Spratling's more architectural hollowware. The scalloping is the only ornament, decoration generated entirely from the shaping of the edge.

The bowl belongs to the first design period, 1931-1946, the workshop's foundational years for handwrought serving pieces, when each form was raised and finished by hand.

Small early bowls of this kind survive in limited numbers.
