Curatorial note

A martini pitcher with a straight stem, this is one of the bar and table forms that established Spratling's reputation for elegant functional silver. The pitcher was made in at least two sizes, this being the smaller, and a variant with a turned rather than straight stem was also produced, evidence of how Spratling refined a single form across editions.

Its standing is documented. The design was included in "The World of William Spratling," the 1965 touring exhibition, whose published Otis Art Institute inventory listed a martini pitcher among the silver on view (Morrill, p. 77). It was also a steady catalogue item, priced at $50 wholesale in 1958-59 and $61.20 by 1967.

The pitcher is recorded in Mexican Silver: 20th Century Handwrought Jewelry & Metalwork by Penny C. Morrill and Carole A. Berk.
