Curatorial note

Eighteen applied discs gathered at the handles make this large silver tray an essay in Spratling's favorite device, articulating function through repetition rather than chasing or engraving. The expanse of plain hand-raised silver is left to speak for itself.

Trays were a staple of his holloware program, and pitchers, trays, coffee and tea sets and salad servers all featured in the 1965 McNay survey of his work (Morrill, p. 77). The hand-wrought quality of such pieces is what the standard literature emphasizes (Morrill, p. 251).

The tray is recorded across several references, including the Spratling Silver Centennial Edition and Penny Morrill's Maestros de Plata, placing it firmly in the documented holloware corpus.
