Curatorial note

This picture frame inverts the usual hierarchy of Spratling's objects, building the body from heavy rosewood and using silver only as ten inset discs spaced across the warm wood. The result foregrounds the material contrast he pursued throughout his later work, the dark dense grain carrying the structure while the silver discs read as deliberate punctuation.

The silver-dots-on-wood device seen here was a motif Spratling used extensively, applied across cuffs, boxes, and tableware as a way of animating a plain wooden surface with a sense of playfulness and sophistication (Morrill, p. 73). On a frame, the repeated discs give a domestic object the same designed rhythm he brought to jewelry.

The piece is recorded in the literature, appearing in Phyllis Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide, which documents it among his objects in wood and silver. A rosewood frame inset with silver discs is a clear example of how the workshop extended a single decorative idea from ornament into the furnishings of the home.
