Curatorial note

This small silver spoon carries detailing reminiscent of the Craftsman period, its handle worked in a manner that recalls the Arts and Crafts vocabulary of hand-hammered, honestly made metal. The reference grounds the piece in a design idiom that prized visible handwork, fitting for Spratling's handwrought approach to silver.

The spoon belongs to the body of his table silver, the part of his output where he treated serving and eating implements with the same care he gave jewelry. The Craftsman-style detailing distinguishes it within that group, a deliberate echo of an earlier handcraft tradition rendered in Taxco silver.

The piece is recorded in the literature, appearing in Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver, the principal reference for his work. A small spoon documented there sits within the recognized corpus of his flatware, a modest object that nonetheless reflects the handcraft values at the root of the Taxco revival.
