How records are counted

“Individually documented works” are matched to discrete museum objects: an accession-level database entry, a museum label, or an object identified in person. “Reported collection holdings” are institutional totals that have not yet been indexed object by object, and are always listed separately.

Exhibition records, gallery photographs, case views, labels, and archives are classified as study records and never inflate the object-level total. Each holding carries an evidence level: official object record, official collection record, or in-gallery study. On-view counts are dated to when they were last checked; display status changes without notice.

Documented works that are not silver, such as paintings, prints, design drawings, and archival collections by the same makers, are labeled by medium and listed separately. They never count toward the silver-object totals.
