Sun Brooch

A radiating disc of silver, the Sun Brooch organizes its ornament around a single centered form, with rays worked outward from a raised central boss. Héctor Aguilar returned to the sun motif more than once, and the version in malachite and silver recorded by Morrill shows how the design could accommodate a colored stone at its center. This brooch belongs to that same family of solar designs, in which the reflective quality of silver does much of the descriptive work: the metal catches light across the raised center and the surrounding rays, so that the object reads as a source of light rather than a picture of one.

The strength of the design lies in its economy. A sun is among the most familiar of ornamental subjects, and the risk in silver is that it becomes either fussy or flat. Aguilar's solution concentrates mass at the center and lets the rays carry the eye outward in a controlled rhythm. Where a stone occupies the center, as in the malachite example Morrill records, the green cabochon supplies a fixed dark point against which the surrounding silver brightens. Without such a stone, the raised silver boss performs the same structural role, holding the composition together and giving the surface a graduated play of reflection from center to edge. The brooch is meant to be seen in motion on the body, and the radiating geometry rewards changing light.

Aguilar directed the Taller Borda in Taxco, and his output through the design period of roughly 1939 to 1962 included a substantial range of figural and botanical pins: two-flower designs, acorn and peak motifs, poinsettias, branch pins set with silver domes or onyx cabochons, and animal subjects such as the crocodile head. Morrill dates most of these to around 1940 to 1950 and records fineness that shifts among 925, 940, and 990 silver, a reminder that Aguilar's taller worked in more than one alloy across these years. The Sun Brooch sits comfortably within this vocabulary of compact, self-contained forms, each built to hold together as a single silhouette rather than to sprawl. Aguilar's workshop combined machine assistance with hand finishing during this period, and a design as regular as a radiating sun would have been well suited to that method of production, though the specific fabrication of any individual brooch is not documented here.

Within Aguilar's work the sun designs occupy a useful middle ground between his naturalistic botanical pins and his more abstract geometric jewelry. The motif is representational, yet its symmetry pushes it toward pure pattern, and the choice to center it on either a raised boss or a colored stone shows how a single design could be varied through material substitution. As a record of Taller Borda practice, the brooch documents how Aguilar built ornament from a clear central accent and disciplined repetition, an approach that runs through much of his production in these decades.
