Curatorial note

The champlevé enamel necklace was among the most sustained forms in Margot de Taxco's numbered design series — a sequence that ran across nearly four decades and, as Morrill's 1994 survey records, assigned lower numbers to earlier models. Design 5337 sits high in that count, placing it in the workshop's later maturity rather than its founding decade.

Morrill describes the enamel necklaces, bracelets, and earrings produced in Margot's Taxco studio as "glittering displays of color, texture, and technical perfection," with elegance of line and sensuality of color combining to produce dramatic effects. The champlevé process — vitreous enamel fired into recessed cells in the sterling ground — was central to the studio's identity, yielding saturated, jewel-like surfaces that characterize the form at its best. That the workshop was still generating numbered designs at this range speaks to a practice that did not settle into a fixed repertoire; as Morrill also notes, Margot employed a dedicated silversmith by 1950 to oversee the enameling alone, a specialization that sustained the technique's quality across the full run.

The design number itself carries meaning for a collector: a number in the five thousands is evidence of sustained creative output well into the studio's mature phase.
