Bird Bell with Turquoise and Coral

A small silver bell set with turquoise and coral, this object draws on one of the motifs Matilde Poulat made her own. Tiny bells, along with the dove and flowers, were among her chosen subjects, reminiscent of the whimsical imagery of contemporary Mexican folk art (Morrill, p. 216).

The form sits within the taller's broad output of objects beyond jewelry, which included roughly one hundred religious pieces alongside its three thousand types of jewelry (Morrill, p. 216). The turquoise and coral reflect the stones Ricardo Salas was trained to carve and set for the firm (Morrill, p. 216).

Bells of this kind connect directly to the folk-art vocabulary at the center of MATL design.
