Curatorial note

A domed silver ball ringed by a rope-twist bezel, set on a shank also worked in rope, this early ring shows Spratling building a design entirely from a single decorative device. The rope motif, repeated in both the bezel and the band, unifies the piece and gives a small object a continuous worked texture.

The ring belongs to Spratling's first design period, the years when the Taxco workshop was establishing its core vocabulary. The rope twist was part of that early language, a hand-worked detail that reads as both structural and ornamental, framing the domed center like a setting around a stone.

Early silver rings of this kind, built on a single repeated motif, come to market only occasionally and reward attention to the consistency of the hand-worked rope detail.
