Curatorial note

Three round discs run across this silver cuff, each split half in silver and half in obsidian so the dark stone and bright metal alternate, the larger center disc flanked by two smaller ones and crossed by a band of three horizontal wires.

The half-and-half disc is a sophisticated use of contrast, setting volcanic obsidian directly against polished silver within a single round element. Obsidian was among the native Mexican materials Spratling drew into his work, and the alternating halves here turn the join itself into the design.

The cuff belongs to the Third Design Period, 1951 to 1967, when the workshop was combining silver with stone and wood in increasingly composed, geometric arrangements. It is documented in Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide.
