Curatorial note

Five links, each carrying a raised pre-Columbian motif, make up this bracelet, produced not in Taxco but by Silson, the New York firm that manufactured Spratling's designs in a silver-plate material.

Silson, Inc. was producing Spratling designs in New York from 1941, with the patents registered in the United States in 1940 and 1941 (Morrill, p. 257), an arrangement that brought his pre-Columbian-inspired forms to an American market in a more affordable medium. The raised motif on each link is Spratling's design vocabulary, his sources used as a "point of departure" from Mexico's past (Morrill, p. 39).

The bracelet dates to the First Design Period, 1931 to 1946, and represents the licensed, mass-produced side of Spratling's reach in those years.
