Flat Band Sugar Bowl

Broad flat band handles, pierced and set with applied silver discs, distinguish this open sugar bowl, with a further disc on each side of the body flanked by vertical incised lines, the companion form to the matching creamer.

The vocabulary is consistent across the pair: the applied disc as ornament, the piercing of the handle, the incised lines that frame and emphasize. These were the workshop's named hand techniques, calar to pierce and cincelar to incise (Morrill, pdf p. 15), and the applied disc a motif Spratling returned to repeatedly (Morrill, p. 73).
