Curatorial note

Tin, not silver, is the material here: a pitcher with a flat broad handle ending in a three-dimensional embossed drum, Spratling working in the humble folk medium of Mexican tinwork.

The choice is in keeping with the founding impulse behind his workshop. Spratling had answered Ambassador Morrow's challenge to revive Mexico's craft traditions (Morrill, p. 21), and tinwork was among the country's living folk crafts. The embossed drum at the handle's end gives a functional vessel a touch of sculptural play.

Tin pieces are a less common survival than the silver, and they come to market only occasionally.
