Curatorial note

The rope-decorated handle and the exaggerated curve of the blade make this cheese knife read as a deliberate composition rather than a piece of cutlery, with the warmth of rosewood set against worked silver. It is recorded in Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide, the reference collectors use to authenticate the maker's work.

The twisted-rope motif on the handle is a signature Spratling device, and the balance noted when the knife is held reflects the workshop's concern for objects that were as satisfying to use as to look at. The pairing of rosewood and silver belongs to a wider Spratling practice of combining native and natural materials with metal.

That the field guide warns this knife has been widely copied with incorrect hallmarks is itself a measure of its desirability, and underscores why correct marks and provenance matter for a piece of this design. First-period flatware of this quality is collected as both useful object and document of the early workshop.
