Covered Vegetable Bowl

Three silver balls organize this covered vegetable bowl, one set as the lid's handle and a pair flanking each side handle, the recurring sphere that Spratling used as both ornament and grip. The device gives a plain serving form its only decoration, ornament drawn from a structural element rather than applied to the surface.

The bowl belongs to the first design period, 1931-1946, the workshop's foundational years for handwrought hollowware, and its restraint reflects the geometric clarity Spratling shared with Jean Puiforcat (Morrill, p. 224).

Early covered serving bowls survive in modest numbers.
