Curatorial note

Rosewood handles capped with silver, finished at the ends with wire and bead decoration, join silver bowls in this pair of salad servers. The combination of silver with the warmth of rosewood is the material contrast Spratling favored in his table pieces, a pairing Morrill ties to the influence of Jean Puiforcat (Morrill, p. 224).

The design carries an exhibition history: it was included in "The World of William Spratling," the 1965 touring U.S. museum show, whose inventory listed salad servers among the silver displayed (Morrill, p. 77).

The servers are recorded in Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. Wood-handled servers with documented exhibition standing are seldom seen at market.
