Curatorial note

A simple silver money clip, this is the kind of small useful object that carried Spratling's design sensibility into everyday menswear. The model was made over time with more than one hallmark, including the earlier WS print, 925, and Taxco marks, evidence of a design that stayed in production across changes in the workshop's stamping.

Dated to the first design period, 1931-1946, it belongs to the range of personal accessories the shop produced alongside its jewelry and hollowware.

The clip is recorded in Mexican Silver: 20th Century Handwrought Jewelry & Metalwork by Morrill and Berk and in Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. Early accessories of this kind survive in modest numbers.
