Amethyst River of Life Cuff

A heavy silver cuff set with amethysts, each stone ringed by a rope bezel, this First Design Period bracelet shows Spratling pairing weight and stone in the manner of his earliest jewelry. The same design was also produced without the amethysts, so the cuff exists as both a stone-set and an all-silver object.

The rope bezel is not incidental. Morrill records that Spratling's early buckles and related work "embodied cord designs derived from saddle ornaments," a vocabulary drawn from Colonial and ranch sources (Morrill, Mexican Silver, 1994, p. 39). The twisted rope framing each amethyst is that same cord idea applied to a stone setting.

The heft of the cuff reflects how the workshop built such pieces. Early production was hammered and worked by hand without rolling mills, and the small details, like beaded and twisted wire, were formed by melting and shaping wire by hand (Morrill, p. 36). A weighty rope-bezeled cuff was a labor-intensive object by those methods.

The bracelet is recorded in Phyllis M. Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. With its First Period attribution, its rope-bezel detailing, and the documented all-silver variant, it sits squarely in the documented early core of Spratling's stone-set jewelry.
