Curatorial note

A circular silver bowl on a slim ebony handle gives this mayonnaise spoon its quiet balance, the polished metal of the bowl set against the dark length of the wood. It is a clear instance of the wood-and-silver flatware that ran through Spratling's table service.

The form belongs to a coordinated line in which handle and bowl shapes recurred across spoons of different functions, so a single service read as a unified whole. Ebony was Spratling's preferred dark partner to silver in these later pieces.

The spoon's catalog price is recorded at $4.00 in 1958-59 and $4.40 by 1967, and it appears in Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. Specialized serving forms like the mayonnaise spoon come to market less often than the everyday teaspoons of the same line.
