Open Circle Martini Spoon

A martini stirring spoon is an unusual object to find rendered with this much design intent: open circles ranged at the top of the stem, silver beads strung down its length. It belongs to the Third Design Period of 1951 to 1967 and shows Spratling extending his vocabulary to the barware end of the table.

The pierced circle and the applied bead are both standard Spratling devices, used here on a cocktail implement with the same attention given to his serving flatware. The result turns a functional stirrer into a coherent piece of the line.

The design is recorded in Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver and has been reissued. Specialized barware forms like this come to market less often than the standard flatware.
