Curatorial note

Brass and cut-stone mosaic rather than sterling silver mark this coffee and tea service as the work of a maker who staked his independent practice on the decorative logic of tesserae set against warm metal. Salvador Terán trained at Los Castillo from 1939 until 1952 — absorbing the workshop's command of metalwork and surface treatment — then opened a taller in Mexico City where stone mosaic became his defining medium. Morrill & Berk record, drawing on Mary Davis and Greta Pack, that Terán was "combining metal with mosaic and has a large workshop busy turning out boxes, trays, and other decorative objects" (Mexican Silver, 1994, p. 206); a service of this scale — coffeepot, creamer, lidded sugar bowl, and sculptural tray — represents that program at its most demanding domestic form.

The set rests on a multi-pointed, star-form tray whose interior field is paved in cut-stone tesserae grout-set between brass dividers, the mosaic extending into the crescent-shaped bracket arms that sweep upward beside each vessel. Coffeepot, creamer, and sugar bowl are spare in profile — a tall tapered pot with a wide angled spout and triangular lid knob, a low open creamer, a compact lidded sugar — keeping all decorative weight in the inlaid stone and the bracket forms. Penny C. Morrill observed that Terán deliberately let "the simple form of the brass pitcher, box, or tray serve as a background for the color and texture of the glass mosaic design" (1996, p. 175); this service enacts the same principle in stone, extended across a more elaborate ensemble.

Terán's investment in mosaic was architectural in scope before it was domestic. Morrill records that in the year he launched his own business, 1952, he designed the mosaic interior of Reveriano Castillo's shop — a cloud-and-night-sky pattern running across two walls that survives intact — and the same ambition to treat inlaid surface as both color field and image carried directly into his table objects.

A full set with its original tray — coordinating metalwork and tesserae-setting across multiple vessels in a unified sculptural scheme — demanded the workshop's most intensive coordination of skills.
