Flower Brooch

This flower brooch belongs to a group of naturalistic silver ornaments that Héctor Aguilar produced in Taxco from around 1940 onward, works that translate a botanical subject into the weight and clarity of solid metal. Aguilar's floral pins are not delicate imitations of blossoms but firmly modeled silver forms, closer in feeling to relief sculpture than to the fine wirework of French or American costume jewelry. The brooch's interest lies in how it holds a soft organic motif to the discipline of the material, letting the silver carry the flower rather than disappear into it.

The petals are built as broad, curving planes that catch and hold light across their surfaces, so that the flower reads through reflection and shadow rather than through applied color or set stones. Aguilar favored this reliance on the metal itself. Related pins from the same years pair silver with silver domes, onyx, malachite, or a poinsettia's stylized bracts, but many of the floral designs, like the two-flower and flower-and-bud compositions recorded by Penny Morrill, work entirely in polished silver. The contrast of a matte or lightly worked ground against burnished raised areas gives the form its depth. On a garment the brooch sits as a compact mass, its curves gathering light at the edges and turning it as the wearer moves.

Aguilar founded the Taller Borda in Taxco in 1939, and his workshop became one of the largest of the renaissance period, known for hollowware, flatware, and jewelry with a distinctly architectural sense of volume. His floral pins occupy a particular place in that output. Where his belts and cuffs announce their structure through repeated links and heavy joins, the flower pins let him work a curved, continuous surface, closer to the modeling of his sculptural hollowware. Morrill dates the comparable examples to around 1940 to 1945, and notes the range of finishes and stones Aguilar tried within the type. The brooch should be understood within that experimental botanical series rather than as an isolated design. Its fabrication in a taller like Borda would have combined shaping, finishing, and hand assembly, the collaborative practice that allowed these workshops to produce recognizable designs in more than one example.

Within a museum holding, the brooch documents the naturalistic strain in Aguilar's jewelry, a counterpart to the geometric belts and bold cuffs for which he is more often remembered. It shows how a leading Taxco workshop handled a familiar decorative subject without borrowing the conventions of European floral jewelry, choosing instead the substance and reflectivity of silver as the whole of the design.
