Owl-Form Lidded Pitcher with Mother-of-Pearl Mosaic

The owl, a figure with deep roots in Mesoamerican visual culture, brings both decorative and iconographic purpose to what might otherwise be a purely functional form.

Los Castillo developed a broad vocabulary of inlay materials over decades of production — tortoise shell, onyx, and crushed stone among them, as catalogued by Penny C. Morrill (1996) — and mother of pearl belongs naturally within that tradition. Shell offers a luminous, shifting quality that complements the cooler reflectance of silver, and its application to a volumetric vessel demands greater precision of fitting than flat jewelry allows.
