Curatorial note

This silver pitcher is a later reworking of the Ovalado pattern Spratling produced in the early 1940s, its graceful body carried on the curving lines of that earlier design and fitted with a rosewood handle for the warm contrast he favored between metal and wood. The form is fluid and architectural, the spout and body drawn into a single sweeping profile.

Per the existing record this example was probably made in the 1960s, an adaptation that shows how the workshop returned to and refined its established patterns over decades rather than abandoning them. The pairing of hand-raised silver with a dark tropical hardwood handle is one of the workshop's consistent hallmarks across that span.

Hand-wrought holloware of this kind continued to be produced by Sucesores de William Spratling using techniques little changed over fifty years (Morrill, p. 251). Later adaptations of the early patterns are collected as evidence of the designs' endurance.
