Curatorial note

A small handled cup, with a worked design at the base of the bowl carried down onto the foot, this is a christening or baby cup of the kind Spratling's workshop produced as hand-wrought hollowware. The ornament is integrated into the structure rather than applied, running where bowl meets foot so the decoration follows the form.

The cup's longevity is notable: per the existing record the design has been reissued, and hollowware of this kind continues to be made by Sucesores de William Spratling using techniques that, as Morrill records, have changed little in fifty years (Morrill, p. 251). It is, in other words, a design durable enough to have outlived its maker.

The piece is recorded across the principal Spratling literature, including Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver, Morrill and Berk's Mexican Silver, the Centennial Edition, and La Platería Mexicana. A well-documented and reissued form, it remains a recognizable example of the workshop's tableware.
