Curatorial note

Weight is the point of this heavy silver chain necklace, a substantial linked form built to be worn as a statement in metal alone. With no stone and no applied ornament, the design rests entirely on the scale and rhythm of the links.

Spratling made the necklace with a matching bracelet, so it functioned as part of a coordinated suite, the two pieces sharing a chain vocabulary across the wrist and neck. The heaviness signals a first-period construction meant to hold its form and presence on the body.

As a substantial silver chain from the first design period, paired with a matching bracelet, it belongs to the studio's jewelry where the worked link itself was the design, and heavy chain pieces of this kind are seen only occasionally.
