Shadowbox Script Collar Necklace

This collar shows Terán treating silver as architecture: a clean neck ring brought forward by a recessed, graphic panel rather than by stones or applied color. The shadowbox construction gives the design depth, while the angular script-like overlay turns the front of the necklace into a compact modernist relief.

The auction description records the necklace as stamped Salvador, Sterling, Mexico, with Eagle 36 and design number 165. Hougart documents Salvador Terán sterling marks with Eagle 36 in the 1955-1970 period, and Morrill describes Terán as an outstanding designer and technician whose years at Las Delicias and Los Castillo shaped his command of silver.

As a necklace, the design carries Terán's graphic vocabulary at the scale of the body: rigid enough to read as a sculptural collar, but articulated enough to remain jewelry. It belongs to the sterling side of his production, where the same modernist instinct seen in his mosaic and metalwork becomes a sharply framed wearable form.
