Curatorial note

A center ball anchors swirled bands of silver that terminate in a "u" shape, turning a small button into a compact piece of designed silver. Buttons were part of the workshop's range of small personal silver objects, made alongside the jewelry.

The swirled wire and central ball are part of Spratling's vocabulary of worked silver, here compressed into the scale of a fastening. Even at this size the design is composed rather than incidental.

Small silver objects like buttons are collected alongside Spratling's larger work, valued as examples of how the workshop's design sense carried down to the smallest functional pieces.
