Curatorial note

Straight sides easing into a rounded base, fitted with round rosewood handles, give this sugar bowl and creamer the clean cylindrical profile Spratling favored in his table service. The simplified, slightly tapered cylinder set against warm wood handles echoes the restrained forms of Jean Puiforcat, whose pairing of rosewood with silver Morrill identifies as a touchstone for Spratling (Morrill, p. 224).

The set belongs to the first design period, 1931-1946, the foundational years of the workshop's hollowware, and shows the wood-and-silver combination that ran through his domestic pieces.

Matched sugar-and-creamer sets of this date survive in modest numbers.
