Curatorial note

An individual pepper shaker rising on a looped-wire base shows how Spratling's design reached an ordinary American table: it was sold through the Montgomery Ward catalogue for five dollars in 1943, matched to an ashtray on a similar base. The looped wire turns a small functional object into something recognizably designed.

Spratling silver was featured in Montgomery Ward catalogues from 1943 to 1946 (Morrill, p. 257), a commercial channel that put hand-wrought Taxco design into mass-market reach. The shaker's appearance in the 1943 Christmas Book records exactly that moment.

It is documented in Montgomery Ward's Christmas Book 1943.
