Curatorial note

An enlarged, generously flared lip and a hollow handle give this water or martini pitcher its profile, the body carrying an incised swirl that animates the plain silver surface. The incising is shallow, decoration cut into the metal rather than applied, in keeping with the hand-finishing of the Spratling workshop.

Hollowware of this kind extended the workshop's output beyond jewelry into the dining table, where Spratling's restrained, geometry-led forms found a domestic audience. The drawn-out lip is functional and sculptural at once.

The pitcher is recorded in Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide.
