Curatorial note

Small, with an outsized lip and a single handle, the form Spratling himself called a "honey pitcher" is documented in unusual detail through the workshop's own catalogues: $4.80 wholesale in 1958-59, $6.00 in 1961, and $8.80 in 1967. The rising prices across a decade trace the design's steady place in the line.

Made in many sizes, the model was carried into the 1965 traveling exhibition "The World of William Spratling," which toured the United States, while this particular size was produced only between 1962 and 1967. The narrow production window makes this variant a more specific object than the design's long life would suggest.

The honey pitcher is recorded in Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver, Morrill and Berk's Mexican Silver, and La Platería Mexicana. As a small functional form sold across many years, it survives in varied sizes today.
