Curatorial note

An ashtray raised on looped silver-wire legs, with a concave depression worked into the bowl - a small object that the workshop treated as a versatile design. Spratling listed the same form as a master salt under catalog number SAL-4 in his wholesale catalog, and a related version was produced in copper.

Its reach into the American market is documented: it was sold through Montgomery Ward at $11.50 in 1943, during the 1943-46 years when Spratling silver appeared in the retailer's catalogues (Morrill, p. 257), the catalog noting that it matched an individual pepper shaker.

The silver version has since been reissued. The piece is recorded in The Christmas Book 1943 by Montgomery Ward.
