Curatorial note

This large serving spoon takes the ebony-bowl-and-silver-handle form Spratling used across his flatware and scales it up, the tapering silver stem ending in a single ball. The model was made in sizes from roughly six to eleven and a half inches, and this is at the large end of that range.

The ball terminal and the wood-and-silver pairing tie the spoon to the wider service, so a full set read as one design family across functions and sizes. The larger serving pieces gave the line its anchor at table.

The spoon's catalog history is documented, with a 1958-59 wholesale price of $13.20 rising to $14.00 by 1967, and it appears in Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver. The design has been reissued, and original-period serving examples are the collectible target.
