Incised Rosewood Salad Servers

Rosewood salad servers incised with lines and finished with striated silver bands at the tops of the handles, this pair belongs to the workshop's later table service in native hardwood and silver. The earliest version, made around 1951, also carried identical silver bands near the bottoms of the handles, a detail that distinguishes the early form from the later one.

The servers date to the Third Design Period of 1951 to 1967 and continue the pairing of Mexican hardwood with silver that ran through Spratling's tableware from the start. The incised lines and striated bands give the plain wood a worked, rhythmic finish.

Recorded in the Cederwall and Riney Spratling Silver volume, in the El Arte en la Vida Diaria exhibition catalogue, and in Morrill's Maestros de Plata study, the servers are a documented example of the workshop's late table silver, with the band placement offering a useful marker of the early variant.
