Curatorial note

Three stylized hands, engraved around its circumference, distinguish this small silver shot cup, a figural motif carried entirely in the surface work.

The engraving is a workshop technique with its own name and tools. Morrill records cincelar, marking the silver with a hammer blow to a cincel, each tool's edge producing a different line (Morrill, pdf p. 15). The repeated hand here is that craft, drawn by hand around the cup.

The piece dates to the First Design Period, 1931 to 1946, when Spratling's range ran from jewelry through small functional silver like this.
