Curatorial note

A detachable azur malachite box hanging from a chain of malachite-and-silver links makes this necklace as much a small object as a piece of jewelry, the pendant doubling as a container that can be worn or removed. The repeated circular links, each rimming malachite in silver, carry the design from clasp to pendant.

Azur malachite is among the stones most associated with Spratling, used here in the elongated-and-circular link construction typical of his chains (Morrill, p. 66). The detachable box reflects the inventive, function-aware turn his jewelry took in the Second Design Period (1949-1951).

The necklace is recorded in Penny Morrill's Maestros de Plata.
