Curatorial note

A silver plate worked with a repoussed ribbed design across its wide rim shows the early Taxco workshop raising pattern from the metal itself rather than applying it. The ribbing, pushed up from behind, catches light around the broad rim while the center stays plain, a considered division of decorated and open surface. The plate is recorded in Penny Morrill's William Spratling and the Mexican Silver Renaissance: Maestros de Plata and in Phyllis Goddard's field guide.

The piece dates from the first design period, 1931 to 1946. Repoussage was a traditional technique put to modern, restrained use here.

A documented appearance in two major references anchors this plate in the record, and the disciplined ribbed rim is a clear example of the workshop's controlled approach to ornament.
