Double Dragon Bracelet

Two confronted dragons give this bracelet its structure. Their heads rise at the opening, their bodies curve down the sides, and their scaled tails gather near the lower edge, so that the cuff reads as a compact sculptural group rather than as a flat band with applied ornament. The open space between the heads is essential to the design: it lets the paired animals face one another across the wrist and keeps the bracelet from becoming visually heavy. At 6 1/2 inches by 2 1/4 inches, it is a snug, forceful object, scaled for close contact with the body and for close looking.

The repousse work organizes the bracelet through relief, shadow, and surface contrast. Raised brows, ridged snouts, small round eyes, pointed crests, and curling tongues or flames give the dragons their animated character, while the textured scales and striated necks slow the eye across the silver. The darkened patina lodged in the recesses strengthens the modeling, separating head from mane, flame from body, and scale from scale. The composition depends on bilateral symmetry, but it is not static. Each dragon answers the other with small variations in angle and pressure, and the relief creates a flicker of movement as the cuff turns on the wrist.

The marks place the bracelet firmly within early Los Castillo production: “Los Castillo Taxco” appears in linear block letters on an applied rectangular plaque, with “Sterling Made in Mexico” and design number 291 on a separate plaque. Hougart documents comparable early Los Castillo marks with design numbers and without eagle stamps in the 1940 to 1945 period, while later eagle-marked Los Castillo examples begin after the introduction of the national assay system. Morrill and Berk note that inventory or design numbers were used by Los Castillo and that, for the most part, lower numbers tend to indicate earlier pieces. The absence of an eagle mark, combined with the recorded pre-Eagle dating, supports a 1940s placement without turning the number into an exact year.

Los Castillo, established in Taxco in 1939 by Antonio Castillo with Justo Castillo, Jorge “Chato” Castillo, Margot van Voorhies Carr, and Salvador Terán, quickly became one of the most inventive workshops of the Mexican silver renaissance. This bracelet belongs to the period when the taller was translating animal forms into modern jewelry through depth, texture, and dramatic silhouette. A related dragon pin illustrated by Penny Morrill in Silver Masters of Mexico shows that the design occupied more than one jewelry format, but the cuff gives the motif a different physical logic. Here the dragons do not simply decorate the wrist. Their bodies make the architecture of the bracelet, joining ornament, narrative energy, and wearable structure in a rare early Los Castillo design.
